Balfolk basics and refinements
Workshop and dance
St Barnabas Church - St. Barnabas Church, Saint Barnabas Street, Oxford, United Kingdom
Learn how to dance the most common European dances so you can join in any bal or clandestine mazurka* you come across! We'll go through some of more common French dances and then practice dancing them more gracefully and effortlessly. Whether you know the dances already or have never tried them before, there'll be something for you in this workshop.
We’ll start by teaching beginners what’s traditional in the French folk dances – partner and circle – and then more experienced dancers can learn variations that you see in the modern balfolk style. We’ll take inspiration from other partner dances and movement such as tango and swing, so you can make your balfolk as soft and soulful, or lively and funky as you feel!
*clandestine mazurkas are spontaneous gatherings of musicians and dancers. Look out on the Balfolk Oxford Facebook group for details of clandestine mazurkas after the programmed events on Friday and Sunday evenings at Folk Weekend Oxford.
There is a ramp at the main entrance to St Barnabas Church, and inside there is level access throughout. There is a standard disabled toilet available.
